About Our Crest

The pagoda and the name above simply represent the dojo and its founder, Renshi John Bak.

The steps leading into the dojo let a person know that there are a variety of disciplines taught at the school, thus "Martial Arts". We are also very proud of our Canadian heritage.

The Kanji on the second step translates to "Dragon". This is in respect of Renshi Bak's martial arts origin, Canada Goju Karate Association. This also represents the karate of Okinawa as was taught directly to Kyoshi William Hind (C.G.K.A.) by Meitoku Yagi former student of Chojun Miyagi (founder of Goju-Ryu). Kyoshi Hind and his senior students Kyoshi Purdy (C.N.G.K.) and Kyoshi Batraks were kind enough to pass these teachings on to their students.

Lastly the white tiger. In 1981 when Renshi Bak opened his dojo he named it "White Tiger Karate". Due to the possibility of infringement rights Renshi Bak decided to change the name to Bak's Karate. One day while searching the internet for martial arts information Sensei Bak came across a page titled " Bak Fu Pai" . The initial thought was that someone with the same name had some form of martial arts school. Curiosity drove Sensei Bak to enter the site and much to his surprise the first thing to pop up on the page was a translation of "Bak Fu Pai' , ironically "White Tiger Kung Fu" . Karma or coincidence?

Renshi Bak also acknowledges Renshi Steve Picotte, his departed friend and brother in the martial arts, as the White Tiger.
